MacNamara;
Variant Spellings; Kilmary, Mack, McNama, McNamara, McNamarra, McNamorrow, Morin, Sheedy.
This surname is Mac Conmara in Irish and means 'son of the sea hound'; it is possible that the original ancestor was a pirate. Their territory was in southeast Co. Clare where they became divided into two septs; MacNamara Fyne (fionn, fair) and MacNamara Reagh (riabhach, swarthy). Both septs were dispossessed of their lands after the Cromwellian wars. One family of the MacNamaras, however, became Protestant and were able to hold onto their lands into the twentieth century.
Donough MacNamara (d.1814), the poet was educated as a priest but was expelled for his wild life; Admiral James MacNamara (1768-1826) was tried for murder following a duel. In France, Count MacNamara, naval commander and diplomatist was killed for his royalist sympathies in 1790
