Variant Spellings; Navin, Neaphsey, Neavin, Nee, Neven, Nevill, Nevin, Nevins, Nivin, O'Nee, Needham.
Neville is a common name in England and in Ireland. It has both Norman and Gaelic origins. The Norman families acquired land in Co. Wexford and the Irish O Niadhs had lands in counties Cork and Limerick. During the penal times the O Niadhs felt it wiser to be known as Nevilles. The O Niadh family of Co. Limerick were traditional keepers of St. Patrick's bell.
Nia in Irish is hero so O Niadh is descended from the hero. In Ireland the name Neville has also been a synonym of Nevin.
Dr. J. Neville was Vicar Apostolic of Zanzibar from 1913 to1943.
Edward J. Newell (1771-1798) informed on the 1798 rebellion; Alexander Newell (1824-1893) was a scientist of note.
