Plunkett;

Variant Spellings; Pluncket, Plunket.

Plunkett is a name that came to Ireland with the Normans and belongs to a family that have been notorious in support of their adopted country. The name is said to be a corruption of blanchet or blanc meaning white.

From the earliest times, no matter what religious beliefs they held, the Plunketts were intimately involved in Irish affairs. In 1316 Thomas Plunkett of Louth was Chief Justice and there are no less than three peerages in the family; those of Fingall, Louth and Dunsany. Oliver Plunkett (1629-1681) Catholic Archbishop of Armagh was executed as a martyr in London.

The aristocracy of the Plunketts were staunchly Catholic even through persecutions and a number were attainted for their parts in the rebellions of 1642 and 1691.

Some prominent members of the family were Thomas Plunkett (1716-1779), a successful Austrian general; Patrick Joseph Plunkett (1738-1827), Bishop of Meath; Sir Horace Plunkett (1854-1932), founder of the co-operative movement in Ireland. Joseph Mary Plunkett (1887-1916) who was executed for his part in the 1916 rebellion.
