Power;

Variant Spellings; Poer, Poor, Powers.

Power is a name that came to Ireland with the Normans. It is from the old French word povre meaning poor and was first written le Poer. The Powers settled in Waterford where they are still very numerous; the are also to be found in the adjoining counties of Cork, Tipperary, Wexford and Kilkenny.

As could be expected many bishops of Waterford were Powers and the family has resisted the English over the centuries. Two Powers were on the Supreme Council of Confederate Catholics in 1646 and a number of them fought in the army of James II.

Tyrone Power (1797-1841) was a famous Irish comedian and the modern film star of the same name was descended from the Powers. Marguerite Power (1858-1884), Lady Blessington was a popular novelist and Father Patrick Power (1862-1951) was a noted historian.

A popular Irish Whiskey is produced by the Powers distillery.
