MacQuillan;

Variant Spellings; McCullen, McCullion, McQuilin, McQuillan, McQuillen, McQuillian, McQuillon, McWilliams, Quillan.

The origin of the MacQuillan name has given rise to much scholarly debate and the leading candidate for eponymous ancestor is one Hugelin de Mandeville who came to the country with the Norman invasion. In Irish the name is usually given as Mac Uighilin (son of Hugelin).

The MacQuillans adopted Irish customs and manners and have been described as ‘as Irish as the worst’. They were completely involved in the O’Neill/O’Donnell rebellion. They were regarded as so Irish that they lost their lands in the Plantation of Ulster under James I.

Edward MacQuillan (1503-1605) was chief when the MacQuillans lost their lands and Rory Og MacQuillan (d. 1634) was regranted some of the MacQuillan lands.

Members of the sept were distinguished in the ‘Wild Geese’ regiments of France and Spain. Father Peter MacQuillan was a leading Dominican in France and became prior of the Irish College in Louvain.
