(O)Quinn;
Variant Spellings; Conaty, Cunnea, Cunny, McConachie, McConaghy, McConaughty, McConnaghy, McConnaughey, McConnerty, Maqueen, McQueen, McQuin, McQuinn, McWhin, Queen, Quenn, Quinn, Whin, Whinn.
The name Quinn, O Cuinn in Irish means descended from Cuinn, and is a common name in Ireland especially in County Tyrone where it is the most common name. The name also occurs in Counties Clare, Antrim and Longford.
In the past and even to this day an unusual custom is associated with the name, in that Catholics tend to spell it with two Ns, while Protestant families spell it with one.
The poet Walter Quin (1575-1634) was tutor and associate of Charles 1. Thady Quin (1645-1726) was the grandfather of the first Earl of Dunraven, a rare peerage for an old Gaelic family.
Families of the Quinns settled in France in the region around Bordeaux where they became prominent citizens.
In the present day the actor Anthony Quinn seems to be descended from this family.
