(O)Quirke;
Variant Spelling; Kirk, Maguirke, McCarthy, McGuirk, McGurk, McGurke, McQuirk, Oates, Querk, Quick, Quirk.
O'Quirke is a Co. Tipperary name and the sept is to be found especially in the neighborhood of Clonmel. The name is also found in county Galway where members of the sept were moved after the Cromwellian invasion.
In Irish the name is O Cuirc and received the synonym of Oats in English as a mistranslation of coirce or oats.
The family was Jacobite in sympathy and suffered accordingly. Fr. Thomas O'Quirke was chaplain-in-ordinary to the Supreme Council of the Confederation of Kilkenny.
