Variant Spellings; Grannell. Gronel, McGronan, McRanald, McRannal, McReynold, Randalson, Rannals, Ranolds, Renolds, Reynalds, Reynolds, Reynoldson, Ronaldson.
The name is Mac Raghnaill in Irish, Ragnall being the Irish language equivalent of Randal or Reginald. The sept is a Co. Leitrim one and in Elizabethan times a Mac Rannal family at Lough Scur Castle changed their name to Reynolds and were known ever afterwards as Mac Ragnaill Gallada or the English MacRandall. It didn't help them very much as the Lough Scur Reynolds were Jacobites and lost much in the fall of James II.
Thomas Reynolds (1771-1832), the traitor and brother-in-law of Wolfe Tone was instrumental in the failure of the 1798 rebellion. Most Reverend Christopher Augustine Reynolds (1834-1893) was the first Catholic Archbishop of South Australia. Osborne Reynolds (1842-1912) and James Emerson reynolds (1842-1920) were famous scientists.
