Redmond;
Variant Spellings; Redmon, Redmont, Redmun, Rodman Rodmont.
This is a Norman name and the eponymous ancestor appears to be one Alexander Raymond. The family acquired large tracts of land in northern Co. Wexford after the Norman invasion.
In Irish the name is given as Mac Reamoinn or son of Reamonn. Raymond or Reamonn, a personal name, became Redmond over the years. The MacRedmond sept in Co. Mayo is one of the many branches of the Burkes.
Like many of the Anglo-Norman families the Redmonds were Jacobites and suffered for their Irish interests. Members of the family were prominent in the Wexford rebellion of 1798. John Edward Redmond (1855-1918) was leader of the Irish party in the House of Commons.
