Variant Spellings; Ragan, Reagan, Regane, Regen, Regin.
This name is resuming the O prefix in modern times. The name today is found in counties Leix, Limerick and Cork. The families in Co. Leix were driven there by the Normans, while the Regans of Co. Limerick are said to be descended from Riagan, the nephew of Brian Boru.
The name in Irish is O Riagain, or descended from Riagan.
Maurice O'Regan wrote an account of the Norman Invasion. Teige O'Regan was a follower of James II and distinguished himself in the Jacobite wars even though he was in his seventies.
Ronald Reagan President of the United States is descended from the Munster O'Regans.
