Rice;
Variant Spellings; Roice.
The name Rice has two different origins in Ireland. The Riches of Louth and Armagh are a Gaelic sept their name in Irish being O Maoilcraoibhe. This can be translated as 'descended from the servant of a branch'; it is difficult to see how this could be manufactured into Rice in English.
There are also Rices in Munster and these are mainly of Welsh stock; the name is scattered throughout the province but today is found mostly in Limerick and Kerry. Lord Monteagle whose arms are shown here is of the Co. Limerick Rices.
Thomas Spring-Rice (1780-1866), the first Lord Monteagle was an M.P. and Chancellor of the Exchequer.
The Rices were prominent in the 'Wild Geese' settling mostly in France and Austria. James Louis Count Rice was an Austrian soldier, a noted duelist and a friend of the emperor Joseph 11.
The founder of the Christian Brothers was Edmund Ignatius Rice (1762-1844)
