Roche;

Variant Spellings; Roach, Rochfort, Rostig.

Roche came to Ireland with the Norman invasion but, even so, the name nowadays is regarded as almost exclusively Irish. The name is French in origin de la roche (of the Rock) and in Irish it is de Roiste. The Roches settled in Munster particularly near Fermoy, Co. Cork. The head of the family is Baron Fermoy, while the name is also found in Co. Wexford.

Father Phillip Roche of County Wexford was hanged for his part in the 1798 rebellion; Sir Boyle Roche (1743-1807) was a noted wit and ’bull’ maker. James Roche (1770- 1853), businessman and politician had a successful career in Paris, Bordeaux and Cork.

The motto in the Roche coat of arms is 'Mon Deu est Ma Roche' or 'My God is My Rock'.
