It is to the abduction of Tiernan O Ruarc's wife Dervogilla by Dermot MacMurragh that the beginning of the difficulties with England may be attributed. The sept territory was in Breffny (Breffny O'Rourke) and today it is to be found in Cavan and Leitrim.
In Irish the name is O Ruairc or descended from Ruarc.
After the Cromwell era the O'Ruorkes migrated to the continent and Russia was the country they chose. Joseph, Prince O'Rourke was General in Chief of the Russian Empire, while two Counts Owen O'Rourke were in the Austrian army of Maria Theresa.
Edmund O'Rourke (1814-1879) was an author and William Michael Roorke (1794-1847) was a well-known composer.
