The MacSwenneys came to Ireland from Argyle in Scotland. They came as gallowglasses or mercenaries to the O'Neills and then became established in Donegal. A branch moved to Munster where they continued their profession under the MacCarthys and settled in Muskerry, Co. Cork.

In Irish the name is Mac Suibhne meaning son of Suibhne who is their eponymous ancestor

The MacSweeneys were staunch supporters of the Stuarts and as a result of the defeat of James II many of the sept were obliged to take service with the Irish brigades on the continent,

Terence MacSwiney (1879-1920) Lord Mayor of Cork died in 1920 after a seventy-day hunger strike. His sacrifice brought Ireland's problems to the attention of the international community.
