(O)Scanlan;

Variant Spellings; O’Scannell, Scandlon, Scanlen, Scanlin, Scanlon.

The O’Scanlans lived in Munster while the territory of the Mac Scanlans was in County Louth. In modern times the prefixes have been dropped and the MacScanlan sept seems to have died out entirely. The prefixes mean 'son or descendant of Scanlan'. Today the O’Scannells live in Sligo and Donegal while the O’Scanlans are to be found in County Cork. The name Scanlon is also used by these families.

Dr. Lawrence Scanlan Bishop of Salt Lake City was on excellent terms with his Mormon neighbors. In 1819 the Scanlan murder in Co. Limerick spawned many novels and plays, including The Colleen Bawn.

In the US there were three well-known Scanlan writers, John F. Scanlan the Fenian and poet, his brother Michael Scanlan and William Scanlan, actor and songwriter.
