The territory of the MacShanlys is in Roscommon and Leitrim as it that of the MacGantlys a variant form of the name. The Mac prefix is rarely used with these names today.
In Irish the name is Mac Seanlaoich or son of Seanlaoch. The name is derived from Seanlaoch, meaning old hero.
The MacShanlys were Jacobite sympathizers and suffered for it; many of them joining the 'Flight of the Wild Geese'. Patrick Ganly (1809-1899) was a distinguished geologist and Charles Dawson Shanly (1811-1875) was a prominent poet in the United States.
