(O)Shannon;

Variant Spellings; Fox, Gilshenan, Giltenan, Giltenane, Gultinane, Shanaghan, Shanahan, Shanahen, Shanan, Shanihan, Shannagh, Shannahan, Shannihan, Shanny, Shanon, Sheenan.

Shannon and Shanahan give rise to three different septs when translated into Gaelic. The first and most numerous of these is found in Co. Clare and here the name is usually found as Shanahan.

In Irish the name here is translated as O Seannachain (descendant of Seannachan).

In Counties Carlow and Wexford the name is usually found as Shannon or O'Shannon and in Gaelic as O Seanain or descendent of Seanan. In Tyrone the name is Mac Giolla Seanain in Irish (son of the follower of St. Seanan) and is often translated as Gilshenan.

The London portrait Painter Charles Shannon (1863-1937) bore this name, as did Wilson Shannon (1802-1877) governor of Ohio in the United States.

It is well to bear in mind that this name has nothing to do with the river Shannon.
