(O)Shea;

Variant Spellings; Shay, Shea, Shee, O'Shee.

O'Shea is a Co. Kerry name though some members of the sept migrated to Co. Tipperary and neighboring Co. Kilkenny in the thirteenth century. They became influential in that area and a Robert Shee was Sovereign (Mayor) of Kilkenny in 1499. Of the 'Ten Tribes' of Kilkenny the Shees were the most important.

The name in Irish is O Seaghdha which means descended from Seaghdha and is translated as hawklike or resolute.

Sir William Shee (1804-1868), M.P. for Kilkenny was the first Catholic judge in Ireland since the Rebellion of 1690. Captain Robert Shee was with Bonnie Prince Charlie at Culloden in 1745.

Sir Martin Archer Shee (1769-1850) was President of the Royal Irish Academy for many years. Kitty O'Shea was, of course, the lover of Parnell and was an unwitting factor in his downfall.
