(O)Shiel is an Ulster name and is found scattered throughout the province. This is probably due to the fact that the sept is a professional rather than a territorial one.The Shiels were in fact a medical sept.
In Irish the name is O Siadhail.
Richard Lalor Shiel (1791-1851) founded the Catholic Association and was prominent in the cause of Catholic Emancipation. In recent times George Shiels wrote many plays for the Abbey Theatre and William Shiels, an Abbey actor, became known as Barry Fitzgerald after he went to Hollywood.
