The name Tierney nowadays can be found mostly in counties Galway, Limerick and Tipperary; however, the main original sept was from Co. Mayo in the area of the barony of Cara.
In Irish the name is O Tighearnaigh and, like MacTiernan, is derived from the Irish word tighearna, lord.
George Tierney (1761-1830) was an English statesman. Sir Matthew Tierney (1776-1845) was Physician in Ordinary to the King while his brother Sir Edward (1780-1856) was Crown Solicitor for Ulster and acquired the vast Egmont estates in Co. Cork on the death of his boss Lord Egmont.
Dr. Michael Tierney, who was president of University College, Dublin was a Galway man.
