Tobin;
Variant Spellings; Tobine, Tobyn, Tobynn.
Tobin is a Norman name that originated in the region of Aubyn in France and when they first came to Ireland the family was known as de St. Aubyn. They settled in counties Tipperary and Wexford and later spread to neighboring counties. They became an aggressively anti-English sept and were more dreaded by the English than the native Irish.
Members of the family returned to their country of origin in the time of the 'Wild Geese'. In the New World many of the Tobins settled in Newfoundland.
