(O)Toole;

Variant Spellings; Toal, Toale, Tohill, Tohull, Toole, Tolley Toughill, Tuhill.

When Christianity came to Ireland it produced many holy men who were known locally as saints, yet the only Irish canonized saint belongs to the O’Toole family. St. Laurence O'Toole (1132-1182) was Archbishop of Dublin when he fought against the Anglo-Norman invasion in 1171.

The O’Tooles have a remarkable record for resisting the English, and in this the were aided by the wooded and mountainous nature of their territory around Glendalough, Co. Wicklow. The family was influential in nominating the Abbot of Glendalough and the bishop of that diocese.

Today members of the family are to be found in Dublin City and in the counties of Dublin and Wicklow. There are also O’Tooles to be found in Galway and Mayo. There is a minor sept of the O’Tooles in Co. Monaghan where the name is usually corrupted to Toal.

In Irish the name is O Tuathail or descendant of Tuathal.

O’Tooles without number have resisted the English invasion of their country and they were also prominent in the various Irish brigades in the service of European monarchs.

When Hugh O’Donnell escaped from Dublin castle in 1590 he took refuge with Felim O’Toole in Glenmalure.

Captain Luke O’Toole was guillotined as an aristocrat during the French Revolution. The eldest son of Laurence O’Toole (b 1722), an officer in the Irish Brigade of the French Army, Col. John O’Toole (d. 1823) was made a Count of France. He is the ancestor of the present Count O’Toole of Limoges.
