(O)Tracy;

Variant Spellings; de Tracey, Tracey, Treacy, Tressy.

While Tracy is a name found in England as well as Ireland, in Ireland the sept is, by and large, of Gaelic origin.

The name is to be found in three main locations throughout the country. There are still families of the sept in south-east Galway though the sept was driven from there. The second branch is in west Cork where they are associated with the O'Donovans. The Tracys were also in Leix but were driven from there to neighboring counties during the turbulent history of the country.

In Irish the name is O Treasaigh or descendant of Trasach.

Rory O'Tracy was the bishop of Ferns in the twelfth century.

In the United States Nathaniel Tracy (1751-1796) was a financier of the American Revolution, while Benjamin Franklin Tracy (1830-1915) was a Secretary of the Navy.
