Walsh;

Variant Spellings; Branagh, Brannagh, Brannick, Brannock, Brawnick, Brennagh, Coan, Wallace, Wallice, Wallis, Wallsh, Welch, Welsh.

As would seem logical the derivation of the name Walsh stems from Welsh, a Welshman. In Irish Walsh, is translated as Breathnach and explains why the name is sometimes found as Brannagh.

Welsh is an old name and one that is common in the country being fourth numerically.

The first of the name was Phillip the Welshman who came to Ireland with the Normans in 1172. That the family was assimilated early may be deduced by the fact that Phillip’s son was called Haylen Brenach in the Irish Fashion.

The name is found in many areas of the country especially in Mayo, but also in Galway, Cork, Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny.

Though the Walshes have held important positions in Ireland through the years, but they have usually been on the side of the crown.

John Walsh wrote the beautiful Gaelic poem "Lament for Oliver Grace" in 1604. Rt. Rev. Nicholas Walsh who was murdered in 1585 introduced Irish type in printing to the country.

Edward Walsh (1805-1850) and John Walsh (1835-1881) were National schoolteachers and poets. Most Rev. John Walsh (1830-1898) was the Catholic Archbishop of Toronto, and Most Rev. William John Walsh (1841-1921) was a revered Archbishop of Dublin.

The distinguished Walsh family of St. Malo and Nantes in France are descended from the Walshes of Ireland. James Walsh of Co. Kilkenny commanded the ship that took James 11 to France after the Battle of the Boyne.

The best known of the Irish-American Walshes were the actress Blanche Walshe (1873- 1915) and the explorer Collins Walsh (1863-1927).
