Wall;

Wall is a Norman name and is both common in Ireland and England. The Irish Walls have been in the country since the twelfth century.

The name is now rare in Connacht although the sept flourished there in the past. Nowadays the name is found in Munster, especially in counties Limerick and Waterford.

In Norman French the name was du Val, a valley. This is translated in Irish as de Bhal.

Stephen de Wale was bishop of Limerick and of Meath and also Lord High Treasurer of Ireland. Joseph Wall (1737-1802) was hanged for his cruelty as Governor of India. Patrick Viscount Wall was murdered in France in 1787.

Edmond Wall (1670-1755) was a Gaelic poet and Rev. Fr. Charles William Wall (1780-1862) was a noted Hebrew Scholar. Fr. Thomas Wall defied the British forces during our War of Independence.

The motto of the Wall coat of arms is 'Aut Caesar Aut Nihil'.
