(Mac)Ward;
Variant Spellings; McAward, McWard, Ward.
Ward is a name that is common in both England and Ireland. The name is among the one hundred most common names in Ireland and with the exception of the Wards of County Down the rest are of Gaelic origin.
As their names would indicate the Wards were bards and their profession allowed them to become the hereditary bards of the O'Donnells of Tirconnel and the O'Kellys of Hy Many. These are the two important septs of the Wards and today they are found in Co. Donegal and Co. Galway.
The name in Irish is Mac an Bhaird, that is 'son of the Bard'.
Hugh Boy Macanward (1580-1635) was the first professor of Theology in the Irish College in Louvain. General Thomas Ward of the French army was guillotined in 1794. John Ward (1781-1837) an uneducated mystic was notorious in England for his extreme views. Ward's Theatre of Dame's Street, Dublin was popular in the eighteenth century.
