The Avacha Volcano is one of the two volcanoes that overlook Petropavlovsk, not more than 10km outside the town. Still active, it stands at around 2500 metres, but from the saddle between Avacha and its sister Koryak Volcano, it's only about 1500 metres. We spent most of the day climbing to the top and wandering around the saddle. Although there's no trail to the top, most of it is a slag pile, so it presented no difficulty.
Off slightly to the right from the centre of the following photo is the faint outline of a wooden shack. That was our overnight accomodation.
The only difficulty in the terrain was the massif that surrounded the peak, which was rather difficult to walk across. The cone in the background belongs to the Koryak Volcano.
The summit.
