Kamchatka Photo Gallery

Having largely and miraculously escaped the Soviet rape of Siberia, the Kamchatka Pensinula is perhaps the wildest and the least touched part of the Russian Federation. It's also pretty remote -- 11 hours by plane from Moscow, the longest nonstop domestic flight in the world.

Because Kamchatka is contained within the Pacific Ring of Fire, its landscape is riddled with active and extinct volcanoes, calderas, massifs, and otherwise bizarre terrains. It's also home to tens of thousands of bears larger than the North American grizzly.

The following photos were taken (mostly by my fiancée) during our trip to the Kamchatka Pensinsula in the first week of September 1999. It's not complete: there are more photos to be scanned and uploaded, including lots of bears photos.
