The Valley of the Geysers, or Dolina Geizerov, is Russia's Yellowstone, except that it's nestled in a volcanic valley. Although it's been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it still receives virtually no visitors and there is no convenient means of getting there. One must charter a helicopter through a local monopoly, which is affordable as long as you can find enough people to share. (We managed this during the height of the "tourist season" -- 20 of us in the first week of September.)
The helicopter ride was actually better than the Valley itself. The next three photos (among dozens we took) were taken from aboard the helicopter.
The acid lake.
A much-vegetated crater.
After the landing at the Valley of the Geysers.
The valley itself.
The Uzon Caldera, not actually part of the Valley of Geysers, but located within the same national reserve. We reached it after four hours' of hiking.
Our accomodation for the night at the Uzon Caldera.
