I financed it for way more than it was worth at 21% interest. But, it was a car to drive. I was particularly fond of the Grand Am. My mom had an 87, and now has a 94. My sister had an 87. I had an 86 Oldsmobile Calais, which was basically the same thing (GM N body cars)

I couldnt help but to

modify this car. I was quick to buy a CB radio with a loudspeaker. I got the rotating yellow woopee light for the top. I also installed a tachometer and Baja Lights before the mirrors. not to mention the Sony 10 disc cd player and the suspension booster kit and larger rear tires.

I delivered Newspapers and drove for Domino's Pizza in this car, so a stop at the gas station was often. From every day use, the car was showing signs of battle damage. I messed up the front bumper when backing out of a parking spot. I turned the wheel the wrong way and shoved the bumper into someone's rear fender on their new Mustang. I goofed the rear bumper when I pulled into what I thought was an alley. It turned out to be someone's back yard. So I backed up to turn around, ran over a railroad tie, and bumped a metal fence post.

The resulting damage prompted me to paint the car. I spent about three hours at the gas station in the wee hours of the morning painting. I used masking tape and spray paint from Wal-Mart. I managed to paint one side by the time I had to go to work the next day. The motor was fun to paint. I jumped the whoops by the railroad tracks, and went e-brake mudding at the semi parking lot at the Dollar Inn. I bottomed out the front end trash bashing down alleys, and busted a brake line when I sunk the front end in a mud puddle at the hotel. I ventured into the Wolcottville Sand Pits and popped the bead on the tire. I was racing against the 83 Grand prix and entered a 90* turn at 60 mph. I laid on the brakes, but the car understeered into the wall at 45mph. The car skid along the wall and then to the other side of the street. I drove the car 2 blocks and parked it at home. The driver side front corner was smashed in, and a motor mount punched a hole in the oil pan. The motor was shoved over enough to cause sparks to fly from the pulleys grinding against the strut tower. I was surprised the battery was still intact. I parted the car out, keeping the radio and all my lights before the wrecker claimed the car. The pretty blue paint is still on the wall to this day on Edgewater Ave, right where it comes out to State Blvd, in Fort Wayne, In.

My mom and my sister both drove Grand Ams.
