History
of the Naval Aviation
- 1925- The "Servicio de Aeronautica de la
Armada" was created.
- 1930- The first
aircraft are acquired: 3 C.R.D.A."CANT", italian manufactured
anphibious aircraft, (two C.R.D.A CANT 18 and one C.R.D.A CANT 21).
- 1934- The CANTs
began their operations from the "Base
Aeronaval Nş 1 Isla Libertad".
- 1942- 6 new "King Fisher"
aircraft were aquired in the USA.
- 1943- A Grumman J4F-2 Widgeon,
is bought in the USA, and used for SAR roles.
- 1944- The first 3 Fairchild PT-23 A
for instruction roles were aquired.
- 1947- The "Base Aeronaval Nş2
" (2nd Naval Aviation Base), located next to "Laguna del
Sauce", is created.
- 1949- The
following aircraft were acquired:
*16 Grumman TBM "Avenger"
combat aircraft, (batch completed in 1950).
* The first 3 SNJ-4,
for instruction roles.
- 1951- The "Servicio
Aeronáutico de la Armada" changes its name to "Aviación Naval".
- 1952- The 12
fighters F6F-5 "Hellcat", for combat roles.
- 1955- The ANU
incorporated:
* 2 Piper PA-18A Super
Cub.
* 2 Bell 47G
helicopters, for sea SAR.
- 1961- The first 3 Beechcraft TC-45 J Expeditor
arrived to the "Base Aeronaval Nş2", used for transport and
maritime patrol roles.
- 1965- 3 Grumman
S2A "Tracker" ASW aircraft were acquired in the USA.
- 1966- The first
military-used Mentor arrived to Uruguay, a T-34 A matriculated A-260 (written
of en 1999).
- 1971- In 1971, the
ANU had a terrible accident, but also a historic situation happened:
* Two Sikorsky UH-34 J
helicopters, were tragically lost in november, 1971 during an air show in Montevideo,
one of the worst accidents in ANU´s history, with many killed and injured.
* A Grumman S-2A (A-851),
made landings in the Argentine Navy´s aircraft carrier ARA "25 de Mayo".
- 1972-Four Sikorsky
CH-34 J were recieved (Two active and two for spares).
- 1979-The ANU
recieved 12 aircraft from the "Aviación Naval Argentina"(Argentine
Naval Aviation):
* 3 TC-45H (equipped
with wide doors for medic transports).
* 9 Sud Aviation
T-28F Fennec with complete weaopns systems: cannon pods, unguided rockets and
bombs. After one loss, 4 aircraft were airworthly, and finally two, which were
sold in 1999, after many years remaining in active reserve.
- 1980- The
following aircraft were acquired:
* A Beechcraft B-200 T
for maritime patrol and electronic warfare, bieng the first one navalized and
armed in the world. Originally equipped with AN/APS-128 survelliance radar y and
ECM devices.
* Another T-34 A, from
FAU (Uruguayan Air Force) stocks, while ANU gave two SNJ trainers to the FAU.
- 1981- 3
Beechcraft T-34 C1 Turbo Mentor were acquired, with full weapons systems (one
aircraft was lost in an accident but the two remaining aircaft still fly
now).
- 1982- 3 Grumman S-2G,
ASW aircraft arrived (from the US Navy surplus,batch completed in 1983).
- 1988- One Bell 47
G-5 helicopter is acquired, (lost in accident in march, 1990).
- 1989- 3 Westland "Wessex" MK 60
helicopters were acquired (A-063,A-064 y A-065, the A-063
for spares , actually one airworthly, the A-065)
- 1998- 5 Westland "Wessex" MKII,
for SAR and transport roles (the A-083 lost in febraury, 2001)
- 1999- These
aircraft were incorporated:
* 2 British Aerospace "Jetstream"
T MkII for maritime patrol roles, ex-Royal Navy.
* For improving the
fleet and keep it in better condition, the obsolete and non-used aircraft were
sold: the remaining T-28F, some Tracker spares, the Cessna 182s, the Piper
Senecas, and one T-34 A.
