During the meeting in Hotel Grand
Legi, Transportation minister, Hatta Rajasa stated that the airport
development still continues. The Minister said that the development
must be done. The purpose of this airport is to support the
development of tourism sector in Lombok, he said.

According to Mr. Swetja, the
General Manager of PT. Angkasa Pura the airport development is still
following the planning. In April they have started with the drainage
system for the ground, setting up a fence around the airport area
and the construction road for inspection the area.
Development Finally Started
November 2005
MATARAM, Finally the start of the development of the new Lombok
International Airport in Tanak Awu village Central Lombok district,
as the substitute for the existing Selaparang airport in Mataram.
Wednesday morning (30/11), Minister of Transportation Mr.M.Hatta
Radjasa together with Managing Director of PT Angkasa Pura, Bambang
Darwoto and Governor of Nusa Tenggara Barat, Lalu Serinata was
pounding the jar to the heavy equipment frame as sign for starting
the ground breaking (see picture on the right).
According to Minister of
Transportation Hatta Radjasa, this is the second airport development
by PT Angkasa Pura I after Makassar which is done by them selves,
and not like the other airport which follows the government pattern.
But the fund can be from investor, central government budget and
local government budget, he said. For the development of Lombok
International Airport which has a base length of 2.750 meter and
width of 45 meter, the first fund to make the airport suitable for
landing of Airbus 310 and Boing 747 will amount IDR 625 billion, not
included the land price for the finally released land of 538 hectare
after 12 years in dispute. The last piece of land of 7,4 hectare was
paid by local government of Nusa Tenggara Barat on Saturday (26/11)
for IDR 2,6 billion or IDR 3,5 million per are (100 m2).
The new Lombok Airport is big
enough for Indonesia area, said Managing Director of PT Angkasa Pura
I Bambang Darwoto explaining.
Lombok international Airport is
build to substitute the existing Airport considering of the
increasing demand of air transportation. Hatta Radjasa mention that
the number of airplane passengers after the crisis of year 2000
reached 9,6 million people, year 2002 12 million people, 2004
increase again and become 24 million and year 2005 is estimated
around 30 million passenger.
Even more now Soekarno Hatta
Airport (Jakarta) is mentioned as the number 2 of the most crowded
and fast developing airport in the world.
Therefore it is necessary to
develop this airport, he said. Because we have people who need to
travel for economical, social, cultural, political and for
distribution reasons.
This increased mobility, if not
anticipated, will also cause technical problem. For example
Selaparang airport (existing airport) can not get bigger than 1
million passengers per year. Also Nusa Tenggara Barat has a tourism
potential and economic growth, he said. Also some technical problems
caused by the environment which can disturb the flight.
Governor of Nusa Tenggara Barat,
Lalu Serinata explained that the new airport is urgently needed
because Nusa Tenggara Barat have nine tourist destination areas
which are already developed.
Those areas can not be developed
further if the airport can not be used by a wide body plane which
have more than 4 hour time flight.
