By the late seventies, the Club had
developed a pattern of getting a new kit every second season for
the 1st. XI and cascading the replaced kit down to the 2nd. XI.
1978 saw the Swifts place another order with “Club Centre”
when they ordered an updated version of their original Blue with
Yellow sleeves. These were of the same construction as the Yellow
shirts and were still in occasional use six seasons later.
During season 1278/79 the North Down league experienced a number
of administrative difficulties and setbacks. The 2nd Division had
been disbanded and throughout the League there existed an apathy
which threatened it’s very existence. The lst.XI progressed
through this season once again featuring as one of the top sides
but unable to capture any silverware.
The immediate future of the League, however, was of more concern
to the Club. The distinct possibility of the North Down league ceasing
to exist forced the Bangor swifts Committee to think seriously about
seeking organised football elsewhere.
The 2nd.XI had been competing successfully in the Down Area League
which had shed it’s Cinderella image and had expanded to three
divisions by 1979. It seemed that the Down Area League was the most
obvious direction to look although it was a controversial matter
which promoted great debate within the Club. Following an at times
stormy A.G.M. the decision was taken to transfer the 1st.XI to the
Down Area League, a decision which was made easier for members by
the fact that the 2nd.X1’s performance in the previous season
had earned a place in the 1st Division for the Club.
