The season started of well, with the Swifts winning
the Champions of Down competition held in Greyabbey.
When the next replacement of kit became due in 1985, the Swifts went
to In-Sport in Newtownards for two kits. The 1st. XI got Blue shirts
with Yellow pinstripes, “V” neck and cuffs, Yellow shorts
and Blue socks with three Yellow bands.
The material was shiny Polyester and the manufacturer was Spall. The
2nd. Xl’s kit was the exact opposite design of Yellow shirts,
Blue shorts and Yellow socks. There was no branding on the shirts
as they had been home made locally! |

Colm Marley took over as
manager for season 1985/86 and his popularity helped encourage a
lst.XI who were still unable to reverse the trend of talented departures.
Despite reaching the semi-final of the Cup, the Swifts could only
manage fourth position in the League, their lowest position in seven
seasons. It was at this stage that the Committee members were able
to take stock of the situation and agree on a development plan which
they hoped would ensure the continuity of the high standards expected
by the Club.
Off the field, the main effort was directed towards gaining membership
of the Northern Amateur Football League. From the mid-eighties the
Club had made half-hearted attempts to join that League, but it
was realised that a concerted effort had to be made to gain admission
as it was felt that they had nothing more to achieve in the Down
Area League.

The North Down Borough Council were also approached
with a view to leasing their pitch at the Valentines on a long term
basis. Unfortunately, this came to nothing, as did a subsequent plan
to lease the pitch at St. Columbanus school. Plans were even drawn
up to have the school pitch enclosed by a fence and also erect floodlights.
