  1987 - 1988 : ADMISSION TO THE AMATEUR LEAGUE
Jack Barr’s death and the acceptance into the Amateur League saw a reshuffling of the Club’s administration, with Brendan McBrien being elected as the new Chairman and the Management Committee of the Club being expanded to six members.

Archie Walls took over again as Manager and was pleased when, resplendent in a new Blue and Yellow striped kit, the Swifts picked up a point in their first Division 2C match against fellow newcomers, Derriaghy Cricket Club.

Swifts captain Brendan McBrien shakes hands with his opposite number from Derriaghy Cricket Club before both clubs first Amateur League match on 29 August 1987.

To celebrate their admission to the Amateur League in 1987, the Swifts purchased by mail order from Kelly Sports in Liverpool what many consider to be their most attractive strip to date. This was Blue and Yellow striped shirts with Blue “V” neck and cuffs, plain Blue shorts and plain Yellow socks. The Club crest was embroidered in White rather than sewn on.

These shirts proved very popular, especially as they rarely clashed with opposition teams. Their useful life was curtailed when one went missing and the Club were left with less than a full set.

The 2nd. XI also got a new strip around this time, from In-Sport again. This was plain Yellow with Blue “V” neck and cuffs and was matched with Blue shorts and socks. The crest was embroidered in Blue. These shirts succumbed to the old problem of shrinkage after several visits to the launderette and were eventually passed on to the Ladies team, still in otherwise good condition.

The Ladies were able to use these shirts as a change kit. Their kits were purchased by the Ladies Committee who selected Blue shirts with one broad Yellow hoop and several White pinhoops for their first kit. This kit was then passed over to the Under 13 squad.

Archie’s target in this first season had been to avoid finishing bottom of the League but this had soon changed as the Swifts fought their way to the top half of the league. Plans and tactics were changed to take account of the circumstances an the Swifts eventually finished in fourth position which was enough to see them promoted to Division 2B.

Action form the first Amateur League match.
