After the by now customary two year
gap, the Swifts returned to In-Sport in 1989 for their next pair
of kits. Only for the second lime in the Club’s history, they
were able to purchase two kits which were exactly the same. These
were of an exclusive design, roughly based on the Glasgow Rangers
away strip of the time.
The shirts were home made of a heavy polyester material which turned
out to be very hard wearing and shrink proof. The body of the shirts
had a Blue diagonal upper half and a Yellow lower half; the left
sleeve was Yellow and the right Blue. The overlapping “V”
neck and cuffs were in Blue with Yellow piping and the shirts uniquely
had small 4 inch White numbers on the left shoulder. Plain Blue
shorts and socks finished off the strip.
Experience had shown that shirts normally lasted two full seasons,
shorts wore out earlier while socks barely lasted a season. However
these shirts took three full seasons of wear and remained in extremely
good condition, so good that they are still useable in 1995 ! The
Ladies team also acquired a kit of the same design on the recommendation
of the male section.
1989/90 season saw the 2nd.Xl join the Amateur League and this marked
the end of the Club’s 15 year connection to the Down Area
League as the idea of a 3rd.XI did not materialise. The proposed
move to St.Columbanus did not meet with success as the school pitch
was too prone to flooding due to collapsed drains. Despite a poor
finish to the season, the lst.XI finished in joint 5th. position
while the 2nd.XI had a good inaugural season, also finishing 5th.
and only missing promotion by 2 points. Due to work and family commitments,
Archie Walls stood aside as Manager and this made way for Artie
Rice to inject some of his experience into the Club.
