1991/92 saw the Swifts get off to a
good start although they were soon out of all knockout competitions
which allowed them to concentrate on their league performances.
However, despite amassing a creditable total of 17 points out of
22 games, the lst.XI suffered the embarrassment of relegation for
the first time in the Club’s history. Although the signs that
the team would struggle to stay up were already apparent at the
turn of the year, relegation still seemed to come as a surprise
to many connected with the Club.
Artie Rice felt he had to resign as manager and he was replaced
by a joint management team of Archie Walls and Tony Cooper for the
following season which was seen as a crusade to restore the Club’s
Division 2B status. Off the park, there was also a change at the
top of the Club when Archie Walls was elected as the third Chairman
of the Club, having served the previous seven years as Vice-Chairman.
At the 1991 AGM the relationship with the Ladies team was called
into question. A co-ordinator was appointed to see if there was
any future in continuing the arrangement. Like the males, the Ladies
team was on the wane and at the 1992 AGM it was decided to formally
dissolve the link.
