In 1992 the Club decided to brighten
up it’s image in preparation of their assault on the Amateur
League Division 2C title. The supplier was the Draperstown based
Pentagon Sportswear who screen printed shirts to Clubs own specification.
The design chosen was a White shirt with two Blue and one Yellow
German style flashes on each shoulder. The “V” neck
collar and cuffs were Yellow with Blue trim while the Club Crest
and numbers were printed on in Blue. Long Blue shorts and Yellow
socks completed the kit.
The atmosphere in the Club was very optimistic going into 1992/
93 season but the first league match back in Division 2C turned
out to be a bit of a disaster when, due to bomb scares on the way
to Lisburn, the Swifts were forced to start their match against
Wesley with only seven players as other cars were delayed in transit.
Despite this match being lost, the Swifts soon made their way to
the top of the Division.
Cup campaigns followed the pattern of previous seasons with early
exits. One major exception was in the Bangor Floodlit cup where
the Swifis defeated Irish League “B” Division side Bangor
Reserves to reach the semi-finals. Unfortunately a controversial
and ill-tempered match against Holywood F.C. in the semis followed
by more trouble in a league match against McQuiston Rec. saw no
less than five players being sent off and subsequently suspended.
This loss of discipline was followed by a bad spate of injuries
which led to the Swifts faltering during the run in. The end result
was that they only finished third and thus missed out on promotion
to finish one of the most disappointing seasons in the Club’s
history. To make matters worse, the 2nd.X1 had an abrupt end to
the season when they were dismissed for failing to fulfil a couple
of fixtures due to administrative errors.
Towards the end of this season, the Swifts played the only match
outside Northern Ireland in their 25 year history. On the weekend
of25/27 March 1993, ten members travelled to Dublin for a stay in
the plush Burlington Hotel.
On the Saturday, three taxis transported the group to a school pitch
in the suburb of Dundrum in south Dublin. As the Manager was not
able to attend due to his tired and emotional state, only nine players
took the field against Mentec International, a team composed of
the staff working at a Dun Laoghaire computer software company.
Star of the impressive 10 v 2 victory was veteran Official, Peter
“Dino the Cat” Vannucci who played in goal for this
his last ever match for the Swifts. His first match was almost 23
years previous against Skipperstone Boys on 14 November 1970 ; this
was the Club’s second ever match and Peter opened the scoring
to notch the Club’s third ever goal.
In between Peter had only played a few matches, partly due to serious
ankle injuries sustained in his teenage years but mainly due to
the fact he was not a very good player anyway!
In that span of years, Peter had only scored a total of seven goals,
the most famous of which was the legendary one scored for the 2nd.XI
against Roadhouse Royals at West Winds on 23 December 1978. That
goal earned the point which eventually secured promotion for the
2nd.XI in that season.
