News and Current Events
24 January 2001, Wednesday, 6:00 PM. The Archbishop celebrated a mass of thanksgiving at the St. John the Evangelist Parish, Dagupan City, for the peaceful conclusion of the political crisis that besieged the country for the past several months.19 January, Friday. 9:00 AM. The thousands of students from the diferent schools in Dagupan went out of their classrooms (some with the explicit persmission of the administration, others just left ) to the streets of Dagupan City. The students formed a human chain from the streets of Arellano to Perez Blvd. Orginally, the plan was for them to converge at the Rizal Ext.- Perez Blvd. intersection, but they spontaneouslyl marched to the streets of Dagupan City passing through the main AB Fernandez Blvd, shouting "Erap Guilty!, and singing "Erap, Erap Mag-Resign ka na!" The march ended at the St. John the Evangelist Parish ground where a short impromptu program was held.
In the afternoon of the same day, a huge march-rally was held. The number of people who participated in the protest action was never seen in the history of Dagupan City. The marchers went around the major streets of the city. The rally was highlighted with news being given to people about the defections of key supporters of Erap. Each defection was met with loud cheers and shoutings, "Erap Resign". Towards the end, the huge crowd declared a people's victory over the imminent resignation of Erap! (Erap resigned as the 13th President of the Philippines the next day, 20 January, and Vice-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was sworn in as the 14th President of the country at noon of the 20th).
17, 18, 19 Enero 2001. People Power 2. People were glued to their TV and to their radios watching and listening to the proceedings of the Impeachment trial of President Joseph Estrada on the night of the 16th of January, Tuesday. When the 11 senators voted "NO" to the motion to open the second envelope containing the Jose Velarde, aka, Joseph Estrada, people went out spontaneously in the streets to express their indignation and anger! Here in Dagupan City, the protest actions were led by the "Erap AGCO la!" which is chaired by Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz, DD. There was a massive noise barrage in three different places in Dagupan City on the night of 17 January 2001, Wednesday, a day after na "tuta Tuesday!". When in the past, the people opted to watch and just stand by, this time, hundreds of people joined the protest actions! Dagupan City became noisy! The noise barrage culminated with a march to the city hall.
The next day, the same places were the assembly areas for another big noise barrage. It again culminated in a march infront of the City Musuem where a short program was held.
