SARAY BALBALITA

30 November 2000, Saturday. 1:00 -5:00 PM March-Rally. Two rallies within a span of  a month. Another huge March-Rally was staged in Dagupan City. It was coordinated by "Erap AGCO la!", the multisectoral group headed by Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz, DD. The rallyists numbered about 5,000, the biggest number so far in the past rallies assembled in Dagupan City. Bigger groups of participants came from Malasiqui, San Carlos, Bayambang, Lingayen, Mangaldan, Calasiao and other neighboring towns. They came in jeeploads and truckloads!

Speakers during the rally were from the Farmers' group, the student sector, the politicians (Cong. Benjie Lim and Ranjit Shahani), Mr Ermin Garcia, Ms. Cristy Ramos-Jalasco, Mayor Celso de Vera of Calasiao, the first Mayor of Pangasinan to publicly anounce his call for the resignation of Erap, and of course, Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz, DD, who spoke only four  sentences:

Alam kong may sakit kayo.
Sino ang nagbibigay ng sakit sa inyong ulo? (The crowd shouted: "Erap!")
Sino ang nagbibigiay ng sakit sa inyong bulsa? (Again, the crowd shouted: "Erap!)
Salamat po! (And the crown shouted:"Erap resign! Erap resign!")
Many of the priests participated in the March-Rally as they joined their constituents expressed their call for President Erap to resign! Incidentally, President Erap was in San Carlos City in the morning of the same day.
26 November 2000, Sunday. Solemnity of Christ the King. The Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan celebrated the Solemnity of Christ the King as one archdiocese. For the past several years, the solemnity of Christ the King has been celebrated in the respective four vicariates. This year of the Great Jubilee, the faithful of the Archdiocese gathered at Dagupan City to celebrate this great feast. Next year, the celebration will again be at the four vicariates.
There were four assigned assembly points for the four vicariates. Vicariate I assembled at the St. John the Evangelist Parish grounds, Vicariate II at the Domnican School, Vicaraite III at St. Therese Parish, Vicariate IV at the St. Albert the Great School.

At 2:00 PM, the Vicariate I faithful with the clergy went to the restored St. John the Evangelist Cathedral which was destroyed several years back. Rev. Fr. Rafael S. Magno, Jr. exposed the Blessed Sacrament. The clergy with the Catholic faithful accompanied the Blessed Sacrament in the procession. At the Perez Blvd.- Burgos St. junction, the faithful of the Vicariates II and IV waited for the Blessed Sacrament before they joined the procession together with the faithful of Vicariate III who met with Vicariate I at the Perez-Zamora junction.

Rev. Fr. Rafael S. Magno, Jr. presided over the Benediction. The "Act of Reparation to Christ the King" was led by Governor Victor Agbayani, the "Consecration of Mankind to Jesus, the King"  by Congressman Benjamin S. Lim, "Oath of Allegiance by Government Officials to Christ the King" by the Dagupan City Mayor, Alipio F. Fernandez, Jr, and the "Litany of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus" by  Rev. Fr. Oliver E. Mendoza.

Msgr. Oscar V. Cruz, DD was the principal presider of the Mass. The  Homilist was Rev. Fr. Luis B. Ungson. Rev. Fr. Allan Morris T. Abuan was the MC and the liturgist of the occasion.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the opening for the first time of the St. John the Evangelist Cathedral Church for the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. The Cathedral was destroyed due to some heavy diggings and by the earthquake of 1990. Today, it was opened again for the people. Msgr. Oscar V. Cruz, DD started the renconstruction of the Cathedral sometime in 1992. We thank the good Archbishop for his tireless, dedicated and zealous efforts in its reconstruction. The church which was inagurated in 1974, and  which we have been calling as the cathedral is now the "St. John the Evangelist PARISH Church".

The country is immersed in one big  crisis that has affected the very lives of our people. After the March-Rally of 28 October 2000 which gathered thousands of Pangasinenses calling for the immediate resignation of Erap, several mass action protests had been staged since then.
14 November 2000, Tuesday. 6:00-7:00 PM. The nation called for Erap's resignation with the "Welga ng Mamamayan" or the People's Strike. In solidarity with the millions all over the country who held protest actions, Dagupan City through multi-sectoral alliance, AGCO, now named "Erap AGCO la!", staged a Noise Barrage in two key points of the city. Both groups began their noise barrage at exactly 6:00 Pm and ended an hour later. One group was infront of the City Hall along AB Fernandez Avenue, while the other group stayed at the Traffic junction infront of BPI, Arrelano St. corner AB Fernandez Ave. The  seminarians of the Mary Help of Christians College Seminary participated in this mass action. Dagupan City may not be familiar and used to to protest actions, but the response of motorists and pedestrians was overwhelming. Cars honked their horns loud and long in response to the rallyists' call :"Bumusina, Erap Resign!". The cry for the day: " Kalampagin and Pangasinan! Yanigin and Malacanang! Erap Resign!"

18 November 2000, Saturday. "Sakbayan: Erap Resign!". This is sponsored by "Erap AGCO la!". Two teams toured Western Pangasinan and Central Pangasinan in an action dubbed as "Sakbayan: Erap Resign!" or "Sakay ng Bayan: Erap Resign!". The SAKBAYAN is actually a motor caravan going to different towns in one day. The purpose of which is to bring to the attention of our people the issues against the Erap presidency and to let them know that the people  have the means to express their sentiments and that there are groups who can help them in the demonstrating the same.  A tricycle driver in Bayambang commented, "Laba-labay mi lan man-resign si Erap. Balet, agkami makapila ed satay grupo yo natan  ta lapud say irap na bilay, agkami makabakante ed anggan sakey agew ed trabaho mi". The comment underlied the rising disenchanment of the working mass and the worsening economic difficulties of the nation..
Sakbayan-Rally
Team A started at Calasiao. Assembly area was  in front of the Church. A short send-off program took place with talks coming from Mr.Ermin Garcia, a journalist and civic leader, and from Mr. Benjie Lim, an opposition Congressman representing the 4th District of Pangasinan. Msgr. Luis Ungson graciously welcomed the group! Fr. Allen Romero, the parochial vicar,  mobilized the youth and the parishioners to take part in the caravan. The towns covered were: Calasiao, Malasiqui (the SAKBAYAN went around the town!), Bayambang, Basista (where the ever generous Rev. Fr. Manuel Sayson prepared a sumptous feast for the group!), San Carlos City, Binmaley (where the High School seminarians welcomed the group and chanted "Erap Resign! Erap Resign! led by Rev. Fr. Winston Estrada, the Prefect of Discipline), and finally at Lingayen.

Team B toured Alaminos, Sual, Labrador, Bugallon and then at Lingayen. Leaflets outlining the issues, as well as questions and answers to the present political and economic crisis were distributed at the market places where the SAKBAYAN stopped.

The College seminarians took part in the SAKBAYAN, riding in vehicles from both teams.

The effectivity of the SAKBAYAN can be gauged in  the responses of the people from the barangays, supposedly the least informed section of the Philippine society.

A rally in Lingayen, the historic capital of Pangasinan, ended the SAKBAYAN. Several speakers spoke to the rallyists, among them were the representives from the Malasiqui Alliance, the student sector, religious sector, BAYAN. Congressmen Banjie Lim and Hernani Branganza, District I, spoke to the crowd, too. Seen by this observer in the Rally were Fr. Winston Estrada and Fr. Bobits Batecan.

18 November 2000, Saturday. San Carlos City. Jubilee of the Youth. The Vicariate of the Queen of Peace held a Jubilee of the Youth in the Pilgirm Church of St. Dominic Parish, San Carlos City. The youth came from the 8 parishes and chaplaincies of the Vicariate.
