SYNOPSIS
Hank Zaret was the new news director at TV station WNDY, sent by executives at the network which owned the station to boost its falling ratings. Hank, who had gotten his start there years before, returned to a station in such financial trouble, its staff had nicknamed it WIOU.
The main WNDY on-camera news personnel were: anchor Neal Frazier, an overbearing womainzer with an inflated ego and a wandering eye; co-anchor Kelby Robinson, a dedicated journalist who had once been Hank's lover; weatherman Floyd Graham, a lovable veteran who was going blind from glaucoma; Eddie Bock, an ambitious reporter / newsman who had minimal scrupples when it came to furthering his career and reporter Taylor Young, a recent arrival from Tampa with a mind-set identical to Eddie's.
Others on the news staff were: longtime executive producer, Liz McVay, who felt she had been overlooked when Hank had been hired; Ann Hudson, the committed young field producer who was dating wealthy yuppie Rick Singer; news intern Willis Teitlebaum, who had a crush on Ann and Marc Adamson, the unprincipled cameraman who worked with Taylor to further both their careers. Tony Pro was WNDY's fast-talking public relations director and Kevin Dougherty, its anxiety-ridden general manager, fearful that if the ratings didn't go up, he'd be out of a job.
Despite lavish praise from critics, and a cast that gave WIOU a very real look, the ratings for the series were lower than the news ratings for the fictional WNDY. The series was canceled with five of the eighteen episodes having never been aired.
