Erva Morgan Barnes, a long time resident of Piermont, New Hampshire, died unexpectedly Monday, October 28, 1996 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 30, 1936 in Norwich, Connecticut.
Erva enjoyed making a living doing custom farm work. In addition to extensive farming throughout his life, Erva held a variety of other positions, including Auxiliary N. H. State Trooper; Camp Ranger at Indian Pond Boy Scout Camp; property manager; dairy truck driver; and employee for N. H. Department of Public Works. Erva's zest for life went beyond his first love, which was farming. He served in the Piermont Volunteer Fire Department, most recently as Lieutenant, was a Deputy Fire Warden, was Vice President of the Grafton County Farm Bureau, a member of the Orford / Fairlee Lion's Club, a 4-H Leader, and a former member of the Orford Booster Club. As a young man, Erva served in the United States Army as a mounted M. P. in the Republic of West Germany.
Erva is survived by his mother, Myrtle (Phillips) Ellal of Niantic, CT; his sisters, Marilyn McFarland of Falmouth, MA, Beverly Bennett of Uncasville, CT, Kathleen Bowman of Woodburn, IN, Janet Reed of Canterbury, CT, and Sharon Breen of Griswold, CT; his brothers, Donald L. Barnes, II of Voluntown, CT, and Gary Ellal of Lake Ridge, VA ; his former wife, Dorothy (Armstrong) Barnes of Plainfield, NH; their children, Deborah Gunnip of Rutland, VT, Linda Barnes-Flint of Burlington, VT, Alice Barnes of Seattle, WA, First Lieutenant Paul Erva Barnes of Tacoma, WA, and Susan Barnes of Bradford, VT; his companion, Katy Blaine of Piermont, NH and her children, Hannah Nadeau, Bryan Nadeau, and Amanada Nadeau; and their child Erva Morgan Barnes, II, all of Piermont, NH. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Erva was predeceased in 1991 by his father, Donald Lyon Barnes.
A celebration of Erva's life will take place Friday, November 1, 1996 at Ricker Funeral Home in Woodsville, NH. Calling hours will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and a service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at South Lawn Cemetery in Piermont, NH directly following the services. Those who wish may make memorial contributions in Erva's name to the Orford / Fairlee Lion's Club or the Piermont Volunteer Fire Department.
