The Cannon Tortoise was designed by the Republic as a long-range support Zoid. Faster and more nimble Zoids were used to pin the enemy down, while the Cannon Tortoise used long-range heavy mortar bombardments to pummel and ultimately subdue the opposition. Obviously, the Cannon Tortoise excelled in this regard.

However, the Cannon Tortoise is not known for speed or maneuverability in battle, although this should not matter if it is used properly. And although it is a small Zoid, it is exceptionally tough and durable; that massive shell on its back is comprised solely of armor and support components for the heavy mortar cannon, making it rather difficult to take out in a firefight. In fact, the only parts of it that aren't protected by the shell are the feet, head, and tail, and those areas are hard to target due to the Cannon Tortoise being a low-slung Zoid.

Weapons:
Heavy Republic Mortar Cannon
This humongous cannon is easily the most noticeable part of the Cannon Tortoise. The heavy mortar cannon is a large-bore, forward-facing weapon that fires high-explosive rounds at a very slow rate, barely averaging two shots per round without proper aiming. However, the mortars thus fired are exceptionally powerful, with a 20-meter blast radius and enough raw power to take out most small Zoids in 2-3 hits, and many larger ones in 4-5. The cannon normally points straight forward, but it can be elevated by up to 45 degrees, giving it a range of well over a kilometer. Like most indirect-fire weapons, the mortar cannon is not known for pinpoint accuracy, especially if the target is moving or a long distance away. Still, with such massive explosive power, even near misses can do a lot of damage.

20mm Cannons
These are fairly basic semi-automatic cannons, and are located on either side of the Cannon Tortoise's shell. They can pivot up to 45 degrees outward and 25 degrees up.
