Art Deco Ireland - Dublin
Carlton Cinema
in June 2002

With temporary additions to the facade, for
use as a film set.
The marquee has been covered,
the windows covered with a blue toned film and the ground floor exterior walls
have been lined in a formica - type
material. Some of this is still present in August 2003. The dispute about compulsary purchase of the cinema by Dublin City Corporation has been in the courts. There is further talk of relocating the Abbey Theatre to this location - April 2004. Meanwhile the bag shop which was in the entrance is now closed, and an internet cafe is upstairs. March 2005 - the City Council won the Court case, but a judicial review is still possible, so the site remains as before. May 2007- the City Council was supported by a recent Supreme Court decision but the owners seem to propose further court action, challenging the CPO system. Site is as before.July 2007: There are now suggestions that an open square would be created at the Carlton site. Unclear if this is on the nearby empty site or on the Carlton plot. June 2008 - major redevelopment plans which would involve the Carlton facade only "moving" up the street, to facilitate a comprehensive development, involving shops and apartments, have been referred back to the developer by the city council. They are seeking further information before making a decision and have given six months for the promoter to respond. Latest - The local authority planning permission has been obtained for the development, and the issue is back with the Appeal Board but will economic conditions now permit the Carlton facade to make the move? April 2009 - there have been several changes to the exterior, with temporary signs covering lower levels.
