SPECULATION & LEGEND
When I first started this, the family legend was that the Laughtons came from the Orkneys. That some past grandfather was a sailmaker, and he went belly side up when he forecast there was no future in steam. Like all tales, there were grains of truth in this. We may still originate in the Orkneys, but we were firmly in the East End of London in 1830! Earlier than I thought by the way the story was handed down. The Laughtons were not sailmakers, see below.
FACTS & SOURCES
JOHN LAUGHTON. born c.1830 in Poplar was a blacksmith. in 1881 he was living at 8 Commodore St.  Mile End Old Town.  John was a blacksmith. 1881 census. John married Eliza Wade at St. Annes in June 1853. John lived at 5 Gray St. Bromley-by -Bow in 1856. Birth cert. for John General. John married Elizabeth Pike in 1874. FBMD  Monday 28/12/1874 St. Peters' Stepney. I have been unable to find either John or Elizabeth in the 1901 census, so I must assume they died between 1801/1901.

EDWARD MADDEN. Born Sunday 21 August 1831 residence Austin St. Shoreditch Baptised 14 November 1831 at St. Leonards Shoreditch. Married Ann Lawson Sunday 17 September 1854. Edward was a sailmaker. All info. from Lesley Worstencroft.

GENERAL WADE.
Eliza and John General's marriage cert shows General as a Mariner. His death cert. indicates that he was a fisherman. Death cert. (died 1854) indicates that he accidentally drowned in Harwich Harbour. Jeane Boyd with info from Marriage Cert. and Death cert.

ELIZA WADE.
Not much known, Eliza had probably died by 1874, as John had married an Elizabeth Pike.

JOHN GENERAL LAUGHTO
N. Born 29 March 1929 at 5 Gray St. Bromley-by-Bow. Copy of Birth Cert. 12/07/1924 held by me. In 1878  He married Sarah Ann Madden in Islington. In 1881, the family was residing at  at St. Judes St. Bethnal Green. 1881 Census. He was employed as a trimmer, probably in a tinsmith's works. In 1901 he and Sarah were living at 613, Seven Sisters Rd. Tottenham. The properties must have been large or very cramped as on census day there were 7 Laughtons at this address, and 8 Hendersons.  There were actually 8 Laughtons but one was away. 1901 census. John General died 22/12/1929. Death Cert. held by me.

SARAH ANN MADDEN.
Born March Quarter 1856. Daughter of Edward Madden and Anne Lawson. Married John General (see above).  Sarah Ann died Tonbridge d. 1936.
