Eeyore's Thyroid Page

Our breeder called us and told us our basenji Momma "Janie" was diagonosed with hypothyroidism.  At that time, Eeyore and me were five years young and so Ma thought we were old enough to get tested too.  My test results were normal but Eeyores results were so so very low that it was almost unbelievable.   I'm gonna let Eeyore have the computer so he can let you know what happened.  Take it away Eeyore....

Hallo everyone...it's Eeyore here.  I have been on thyroid meds since I was five years old.  And boy what a roller coaster wild ride this has been   When Ma & Pa got my blood tested, it saved my life.  I was getting so grumpy and snappy I would fight with everyone.  I would only play with Roo for 2 minutes before I would start fighting.  I was getting really depressed and didn't feel like doing anything...

It was a few years ago that I was starting to feel bad.  If I didn't eat, I would barf.  Ma and Pa would take me up the the bathtub when I would get that "I'm gonna throw up look" and hold me in the tub and tell me I was a good boy.  Then I would barf down the bathtub drain.  Now when ever I feel sick (usually cause I am playing too much and forget to eat), I run upstairs and barf in the bath tub on my own.  If Ma or Pa is at home, they will run upstairs and hold me till I finish getting sick.  But ya know...since I have been on thryoid medicine I get sick only about once every 3 or 4 months.  And  you should see just how lovely my fur has gotten.  It used to be coarse and ruff, but now my fur coat is smooth, soft and silky.

My first thyroid first test showed my level was 13.  Then I went on thyroid pills for a month and went back for another blood test which showed my level up to 18.  Then after 3 months on thryoid pills my level went up to 28 and then 3 months more my level went up to 36 (and that's pretty much where my "level" has been).  Ma didn't keep track at first just what these "levels" meant.  She was mostly concerned that I get better (but now I think she knows she is supposed to make the vet explain "everything" to her).  I'm just glad Ma made me go to the vet even though I don't like getting needles.  I also lost weight...nearly 5 pounds in the past 2 years.

I hafta take 2 thyroid pills every day (one in the morning and one at night).  Ma says "Eeyore...come and get your pill" so I jump off the couch and walk over to her.  But sometimes I like to have fun with Ma and "cheek" my pill.  I pretend to swallow and lick my lips.  Ma opens my mouth and looks way inside and usually finds the pill sitting back there.  So she gets a piece of spinach or a green bean and "treats" me so I end up swallowing my pill. It dosen't cost very much for my pills...and it's just a little bit of money for my yearly blood test to make sure I have the right strength of medicine.  But I think I am worth it....Ma loves to watch Roo and me play.  And I even talk and sing more now than ever before!!!
