Six foreigners arrested for engaging in 'short-term marriages'
BOGOR, West Java (Antara): Police in Bogor have arrested six tourists from Saudi
Arabia and six Indonesian women for engaging in the practice of "short-term
marriages".
Bogor Police chief Sr. Comr. Sukrawardi Dahlan said Tuesday residents of Cisarua
district in Bogor, West Java, had complained about the practice of such short-term
relationships between foreigners and local women.
"They have violated Indonesian marital regulations," he was quoted by Antara news
agency as saying. He did not go into detail on the violation.
He said the police would begin cracking down on the practice.
The arrests occurred Monday. The foreigners were handed over to the Bogor
Immigration Office, while the women were detained at Bogor Police Headquarters.
The head of the immigration office, Yeyet P. Oking, said the foreigners were also
accused of violating immigration laws. They will be deported if found guilty.
[The Moron] Vice President Jusuf Kalla recently joked that such short-term
relationships were acceptable because the women benefited from the relationships.
Women's activists slammed Kalla for the statement. (**)
