Police asked to reenact Poso riots
JAKARTA: Lawyers for three men on death row for their roles in religious violence in
Poso, Central Sulawesi, are calling for the police to reinvestigate the attacks that led
to the men's convictions.
The team from the Advocating Service for Justice and Peace (Padma) met National
Police investigators here Tuesday to file the request.
Padma spokesman Aris Hutabarat said three attacks in three villages in Poso --
Talogu, Moengko Baru and Situwu Lemba -- should be reconstructed by police.
"The police promised they would follow up the suggestion," Aris said.
Padma hopes the reconstruction will help prove the innocence of Fabianus Tibo,
Dominggus da Silva and Marinus Riwu who are on death row after being convicted on
charges of masterminding the 2000 attacks in which some 200 people died.
"(Convicted rioter) Heri Mangkawa confessed during his trial that he saw murderers in
the Al-Hijrah Mosque in Tagolu village and Tibo was not one of them," Aris said.
Heri was jailed for 12 years for his involvement in the Poso riots.
Lawyers for the three men say they have unearthed new evidence that 16 men,
including members of the police, military and government officials, masterminded the
Poso violence.
"But until now the police haven't charged them with anything," Aris said. (JP/04)
