Bomb kills one on Sulawesi island
TANGKURA, Central Sulawesi (AP): A bomb exploded Wednesday on an Indonesian
island that has been hit by religious violence, killing one person, police and witnesses
said.
The circumstances of the blast at an abandoned building in Tangkura village on
Sulawesi are under investigation, said police Comr. Minarto.
"This was a bomb, but we are still examining the crime scene," he said.
The victim, a 50-year-old male, was urinating under the building, which was built on
stills, when the blast went off, witnesses told The Associated Press.
The blast occurred in Central Sulawesi province, where Muslims and Christians
battled in 2001 and 2002, leaving about 1,000 people dead.
Caches of bombs left over from the conflict are occasionally found or explode
accidentally.
Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation but has significant Christian
minorities. Central Sulawesi province has a roughly equal number of people from each
religion.
Tangkura is a chiefly Christian village, but the religion of the dead man was not
immediately known. (***)
