10 Indonesian volunteers to leave for Lebanon, Palestine
JAKARTA (Antara): Ten Indonesian volunteers will leave for Lebanon and Palestine
next Monday to deliver humanitarian aid from Indonesians.
Chairman of the Indonesian Humanitarian Committee, Suripto, who will led the
Indonesian team, said Thursday the volunteers would fly to Syria and then travel
overland to Palestine and Lebanon.
He did not specify the assistance to be delivered, but said they came from
non-governmental organizations and the public.
Members of the team come the House of Representatives, non-governmental
organizations and medical personnel from the Indonesian Red Crescent Society.
"When we are in the countries, we will also carry out a survey on the assistance
needed by people in Palestine and Lebanon," Suripto was quoted by Antara news
agency, adding that three legislators on the team would return home Aug. 20, while
the rest of the team would stay longer.
Thousands of Indonesians have carried out street rallies to protest Israeli military
attacks against Lebanon, which have killed around over 1,000 people, mostly civilians.
At least two Indonesian militant groups -- the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) and the
Indonesian Mujahiddin Council (MMI) -- have opened registration for those who want to
travel to Lebanon and help fight Israel. (**)
